CCTV footage clearly identifies the four men walking into the shop in pairs just before 2pm on Tuesday, February 2, 2016. The first two pretended to shop as they awaited the arrival of their accomplices.
Minutes later, one of the men pretended to casually engage with the store assistant over the price of a two-litre soda while his colleague rushed behind the counter where he shoved the assistant with what he believed was a firearm. They proceeded to empty cash into a bag and their pockets. One of the men is seen taking the donation tin from the counter and tries unsuccessfully to steal the Point-of-Sale machine.
They also robbed the store of cigarettes and the assistant’s cellphone.
Someone somewhere must know these lowlifes. Numerous CCTV cameras around the area could have captured the four as they drove away in their getaway vehicle along Belmont Road.
The store’s owners are patiently waiting for the police to conclude their investigations and probably make arrests. But this may not happen without the public’s help.
Apart from incidences of petty crimes such as muggings and parked cars being broken into, Rondebosch was a relatively safe area. But this has changed, with several incidents of sexual assault of University of Cape Town students reported.
Anyone with information that could lead to arrest of these four men is should contact the Investigating Officer, Constable JMS Thomas on 021-685 7345 or to send detailed anonymous SMS to Crime Line’s 32211 (SA only).
